12/12/2019: Exploring Koh Rong

Breakfast by the beach

Had a lovely lie in today. Mat had headed out a bit earlier to go for a walk and grab breakfast. I did a workout as I had missed two days and felt a bit guilty! Once I’d showered (cold), I left to see what the good restaurants of Koh Rong had to offer for breakfast. I settled for a café that was right next to the beach. Sitting in the blazing sunshine, I had more muesli and fruit, with yoghurt on top. I really love this for breakfast, can’t get enough, mostly because the fresh fruit is delicious.

As I was halfway through my meal, Mat rolled up and sat with me. We had a bit of a chit chat whilst I finished breakfast, and debated on what to do. After I finished my breakfast, we gathered our laundry from the bungalow, and left it at a nearby laundrette, one of only a few. Mat and I wanted to visit the next beach up, which was called 4K beach. This was supposed to be a long and beautiful white beach, with not many buildings or tourists on…what’s not to love!

For our first beach experience in Asia, check it out here!

The long road to 4K beach

As we looked on Google Maps at Koh Rong, we saw there was a road that was inland, went through the island, and came out at 4K beach. The path began at the back of a hotel, and so our long trek to 4K beach had begun. The path was non-existent, it was steep and was comprised of just loose rocks. I couldn’t believe my eyes when a fellow on a motorbike came past us. We could barely walk up it, never mind take a bike up it. Apart from that, we saw nobody else the whole time.

We’d taken our tops off to get a bit of sunshine on our pasty white bodies. Now and again, we did manage to get a few good glimpses of the ocean, however, where we were heading promised more. It felt like this path took forever, probably due to the heat bearing down on us. Seemed strange that this was the only way to 4K beach on Koh Rong, except by boat. Eventually, we began to see civilisation, and not long after, the beautiful blue ocean.

The perfect beach

We came out roughly on the centre of the beach, loads of sand left, loads of sand right. I didn’t quite know what to expect from the beaches of Koh Rong, but this sight surely exceeded my expectations. This was the very image of a paradise island, it really was. The sand was very hot, so we had to move quickly. We picked a spot, dropped our stuff, and decided to take a dip. The ocean was nice and cool, such a refreshing contrast from on the land. After spending a good amount of time in the sea, we were approached by a stranger.

It turned out to be Mikaela(?), an Israeli girl who we had met several times along the way. Boggles me that we see so many of the same people repeatedly. For about half an hour or more, we played Frisbee with them, 2 versus 2. It was actually a lot of fun, as I used to play Frisbee back home. One of the guys was an absolute expert, and really knew his way around a Frisbee. After a lot of fun had been had, and sweat had been sweat, Mat and I turned out sights to our own village. We’d been told by the others that there’s a much shorter and direct route through some trees that were between our beach and 4K beach.

Back to our beach

Having walked down 4K beach towards our beach, and seeing an alluring hostel along the way, we managed to find the sneaky route through the trees. This path was a hell of a lot quicker, and a lot nicer than the hot and rocky path we took earlier. When we got back to town, we went straight for some delicious food, before going back to the hostel.

After an already tiring day, we did our workout, and chilled the hell out for some time. Even though days like this are physically demanding, you feel great at the end of the day, because you know you got the most out of what you could have done. After much thought, we both had a clear out of some of our luggage that we didn’t need, so we were to be much lighter afterwards. Once it had become dark, we decided to go out for something to eat and drink, before turning in for the night.
