07/03/2020: Exploring Coron

Sweating buckets

After a couple of activity filled days, we decide to take it a touch slower today. We planned on exploring Coron, as we’d only seen the high street as of yet. In fact, we took it so slow, we almost missed the morning, getting up at 11am after a glorious lie in. Even when we woke up, we just sat around for a few hours, making vague plans for where next and what to do. Our flight is tomorrow morning, and there’s no public transportation here. Instead, we booked a shuttle bus to the airport from the reception at the hostel, pretty handy. Once we were finally ready, we left and headed for lunch at a place recommended by the receptionist, Hazel.

Lunch was pretty nice, and once it’d gone down, we carried on with the exploring of Coron. Instead of actually resting, we decided to climb to the top of a hill/mountain that was in the town. At the top, there’s a viewpoint where you can see all around, so thought that’d be a good idea. We soon changed our tunes when we were ascending the 700+ steps in 35 degree heat. I was absolutely sweating buckets, it was nuts. It’s so crucial to carry water with you in Asia, just in case you do anything crazy and spontaneous like this. To be fair though, the viewpoint was pretty wicked, and you really could see all around and into the sea.

Back to town

Once we’d had enough of torturing ourselves, we descended the mountain, but this time a different way. It took us through grass and off the beaten path, to the other side of town. This path reminded me of the trails I used to hike with my dad in the Peak District, in England. The walk was nice as the Sun had past its hottest, and we descended to ground level. Conveniently, we happened to pass McDonald’s on the way back into town, and we thought it rude to not pay a visit.

Check out this early morning climbing experience in Laos, that was sensational!

After having indulged in McDonald’s, we headed back to the hostel in the evening. We’d accrued a tab of sorts, so we paid for all of our stay and services we’d used, then went to chill in our room. I called my parents later on, catching up with them for a couple of hours. Looking back, I didn’t call family as much as I should have, and it’s something that I’ve made an effort to change, with great success. As our flight is really early tomorrow morning, I went to bed earlier than usual, no complaints from me!
